What and who are we expecting?

In John 14:1-3, the Lord Jesus says to His disciples:

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe on God, believe also on me. In my Father’s house there are many abodes; were it not so, I had told you: for I go to prepare you a place; and if I go and will prepare you a place, I am coming again and will receive you to myself, that where I am you also may be” (John 14:1-3).

Read these verses carefully several times!

1

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe on God, believe also on me” (John 14:1).

What then has happened? Why are they so sad? Ah, the Lord has spoken terrifying words to them! Imagine this:

Your response:

What will Judas, one of them, do? (John 13:21)
What will Peter do? (John 13:38)
What did He say to Peter? (John 13:36)
Where I go you can not follow me now.
He will deny Jesus.
He will betray Jesus to the enemies.

The words of the Lord Jesus in Chapter 13 had left the disciples sad and dismayed. But He wanted to comfort them. This is achieved through His words at the beginning of Chapter 14. You have already read them, they come from His compassionate heart!

Your response:

Did they have to be dismayed and afraid?
Where is He going?
Is there enough room there?
What is He doing there?
What happens in the future (soon)?
What for?
He comes again to take his disciples to himself.
He is preparing a place for them.
He himself will come again.
No!
In His Father's house are many mansions.
He is going to His Father's house.

The Lord is coming again. He is coming again to bring us and the disciples into His Father's house. He would like us to be with Him. You can read this in John 17:24. What does Jesus say there?

Your response:

Father, as to those whom you have given me,     that where I am they also may be     , that they may behold my   which you have given me, for you   me before the foundation of the world.

When a young man is engaged, he awaits the wedding day. He is only truly happy when his bride is completely with him forever.

However, the Lord Jesus desires to have us with Him even more strongly. He very emphatically says to His Father: "I desire".

“Father, as to those whom you have given me, I desire that where I am they also may be with me, that they may behold my glory which you have given me, for you loved me before the foundation of the world.” (John 17:24)

He only uses these same words one more time in the New Testament - in Luke 5:13.

Who is the Lord saying this to?
