Basic Bible Course 3

New Birth (Part 1)

In the Bible, conversion and new birth (or: being born again) are discussed.

The emphasis in conversion is on what a man must do to be saved. He must:

  • turn to God in repentance and conversion
  • make a confession of guilt and believe in the Lord Jesus

In new birth, the emphasis is on what God does with dead sinners. He

  • gives new life
  • grants a new nature, and
  • shapes us into a new creation

The Bible verse in this regard states: "God ... who ... has begotten us again ..." (1 Peter 1:3).

In this lesson, we will discuss the necessity of the new birth, the means that enable the new birth, and the characteristics of the new birth.

The Necessity of beeing born again

1

The necessity of being born again is evident from John 3.

There we read:

Your response:

If anyone is not born anew,
If anyone is not born of water and of Spirit,
he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. (John 3:5)
he cannot see the kingdom of God. (John 3:3)
2

Which word from John 3:7 particularly emphasizes the necessity?

Your response:

"Do not marvel that I said to you, 'It is   that you should be born anew.'"

3

The new birth is not an "improved" repetition of the first birth. If someone were born a second time in a natural way, he would still be as sinful and unfit for the kingdom of God.

Which statement from John 3 shows this?

Your response:

  • is flesh. (Verse 6)
  • born
  • which is
  • of the flesh
  • That
