Faith in Practice

You will be my witnesses

In Matthew 12:34, the Lord Jesus speaks words that closely match those in Luke 6:45:

The good man, out of the good treasure of his heart, brings forth good; and the wicked man out of the wicked, brings forth what is wicked: for out of the abundance of the heart his mouth speaks. (Luke 6:45)

A well-known proverb says, "Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks." What fills our heart? What do we talk about? There is someone, a person, who can fill our hearts. That is the Lord Jesus. Do you know Him? Do you often think about Him? And have you ever dared to speak to others about Him?

What does it mean to be a witness? What does it mean to testify about something? Do we know people from the Bible from whom we can learn? If you read some verses from the first chapter of the Gospel of John, you will find someone who is an example for us in this respect.

Please read the following verses:

  • John 1:6-9
  • John 1:15
  • John 1:32-34

Your response:

In the first chapter of the Gospel of John, there is mention of   the   . He bore witness to the Lord Jesus, who came into the world as the true   . He did not speak of himself, nor was he concerned with his own ideas and desires. He said of the Lord Jesus, "He that comes after me is   before me, for he was before me", and "I have seen and borne witness that this is the       ".

Witnessing therefore means: Speaking with other people about the Lord Jesus. To tell who He is and what He did. Whoever does this is a witness!

In Acts 10 we read about Cornelius, a Roman centurion. He had gathered his relatives and close friends because he was expecting Peter. When Peter came to them, he spoke to them about Jesus of Nazareth ...

Read Acts 10:34-43 carefully! What does Peter say in verse 39?

We also are witnesses of all things which he did both in the country of the Jews and in Jerusalem; whom they also slew, having hung him on a cross

Your response:

We also are
of all things
both in the country of the Jews
which he did
and in Jerusalem ...
witnesses

By the Lake of Tiberias, Peter heard from the mouth of the Lord Jesus how his life on earth would end (John 21:17-19). In the Acts of the Apostles, much is read about his service and what he had to endure.

A comparison with what Peter writes about suffering in his first letter is revealing (1 Peter 5:1). Which of the following statements are true?

Your response:

Open now the first letter of John and read 1 John 1:1-4! In the first verse, the Lord Jesus is called the Word of Life. What does John write at the beginning of verse 3?

Your response:

... that which we have   and   , that we   to you ...
