Basic Bible Course 2

The Origin of the Bible (Part 2)

About 40 people wrote 66 books over a period of about 1500 years that form a unity - that in itself is a great miracle!

But that's not all. These forty writers were by no means forty people with the same education and knowledge. Among them are kings, farmers, fishermen, doctors and others, i.e. educated and less educated people. Their characters and life habits were also different. Despite these differences, they put together a masterful composition of 66 books.

We will delve a little deeper into this in this lesson.

Let's return to Moses. In his writings, you can learn a lot about his background, his life, his character, and his faith. The New Testament speaks also about him.

Read in Acts 7:17-21, what Stephen writes about the first 40 years of his life!

Your response:

Moses grew up
He was educated
This curriculum also contained much that,
Therefore, it was all the more important
These teachings proved to be stronger,
in all the wisdom of the Egyptians.
in the court of Pharaoh.
as we read in Hebrews 11:24-26.
could have been to Moses' disadvantage.
what he had learnt at home from his parents.

The life of Moses can be divided into three sections, each lasting 40 years. What can you learn about the second 40 years of his life? To understand this, read Exodus 2:11 to 3:1 and Acts 7:23.30!

Your response:

When Moses was   years old, he fled to   . There he stayed for   years with   , also known as Jethro. Moses practiced the profession of a   there.

After 40 years in Midian, Moses led Israel out of Egypt and guided the people through the wilderness for 40 years. During the desert journey, he wrote down the five books of Moses. We find references to his activity as a scribe time and again.

Your response:

And the LORD said to Moses, Write this for a memorial in the book, and rehearse it in the ears of Joshua, that I will utterly blot out the remembrance of Amalek from under the heavens.
And Moses wrote their goings out according to their journeys by the commandment of the LORD; and these are their journeys according to their goings out.
And Moses wrote this law, and delivered it to the priests, the sons of Levi, who bore the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and to all the elders of Israel.
And Moses wrote this song the same day, and taught it to the children of Israel.
And it came to pass, when Moses had ended writing the words of this law in a book, until their conclusion, ...
Deuteronomy 31:22
Numbers 33:2
Deuteronomy 31:24
Exodus 17:14
Deuteronomy 31:9

Moses was highly educated. However, this is not the case for all writers of the Bible.

Sixteen prophets - sometimes one speaks of four major and twelve minor prophets - have left us inspired writings. One of the twelve "minor" prophets is Amos. Read the beginning of his book and also Amos 7:14-15!

Your response:

Amos was among the   of Tekoa, a city in Judah. He served during the reigns of King   of Judah and Jeroboam II of Israel. The time of his prophetic ministry was around 765-750 BC. He did not attend a school of prophets. He was a   and gathered (i.e., cultivated)   .
