The End of the Flesh

Before we get to our topic, we want to state that the word "flesh" has several meanings in the Bible.

Which one is primarily meant (sometimes more than one meaning seems to underlie the same passage) can be determined from the context.

1

Try to ascertain the respective meaning of the term "flesh":

Your response:

Genesis 2:21; Job 10:11:
Exodus 30:32; Psalm 16:9:
Genesis 6:13; 9:11,15:
Genesis 6:3,12; Numbers 16:22:
All living creatures on the earth.
The organic flesh as a building material of the human body.
The human body.
Man as a fallen, sinful creature.

We now want to quote a few passages from the New Testament that use the word "flesh" in the meaning of human nature corrupted by sin.

2

What controls the flesh?

Your response:

Romans 13:14 -
Galatians 5:16 -
Ephesians 2:3 -
1 Peter 4:2 -
1 John 2:16 -
Among whom we also all once had our conversation in the lusts of our flesh.
Because all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life.
But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and do not take forethought for the flesh to fulfil its lusts.
To no longer live the rest of his time in the flesh to men's lusts, but to God's will.
But I say, Walk in the Spirit, and you will no way fulfil flesh's lust.
3

What essential characteristic of the flesh do the following passages reveal?

Your response:

Romans 8:5-7 -
Ephesians 2:3 -
Colossians 2:18 -
Redeemed ones, who formerly followed the will of the flesh and of the mind.
The mind of the flesh is death, and the mind of the flesh is enmity against God.
He who does his own will ... vainly puffed up by the mind of his flesh.
