This lesson could also be named "Philip and Nathanael". Do you know why?
Because the same person is sometimes called Bartholomew and sometimes Nathanael. In the Gospels according to Matthew, Mark, and Luke, you always read "Philip and Bartholomew". But if we open the Gospel according to John, we suddenly read "Philip and Nathanael".
So remember: Bartholomew is the same person as Nathanael.
Take a look at the name Bartholomew. The first syllable of this name is Bar, which means: Son of. So we can say: Bartholomew means son of Tholomaeus.
Do you know more names from the Bible that start with Bar?
Search for them in Mark and in the Acts of the Apostles, as well as in the 1st Book of Chronicles (Old Testament).
Your response:
(Mark 10:46)
(Mark 15:7,15)
(Acts 4:36)
(Acts 13:6)
(Acts 1:23 and 15:22)
We also find the epithet Bar in Peter:
In the Bible, people do not have last names. So that we can still distinguish them, something is added to the first name. This way, we know better who is meant.
Take for example the name "James" :
Now read John 1:43-51.
