The Good Shepherd

1

What has happened here? All these books from the New Testament are mixed up!

Can you help me write them back in the order they appear in the New Testament?

This shouldn't be difficult. Use the table of contents for help. In the New Testament that I sent you, you'll find it two pages before the first book, the Gospel of Matthew.

Your response:

  • Revelation
  • 2nd Peter
  • 3rd John
  • 1st Timothy
  • Gospel of John
  • 2nd Corinthians

Do you actually know why it is sometimes called "John's-Gospel" and at other times "John's-Letter"?

John was a disciple of the Lord Jesus and he recorded many things from the life of the Lord Jesus. You can read this in the lengthy John's-Gospel.

Later, when John was already old, he wrote three short letters to friends: The 1st John's-Letter, the 2nd John's-Letter and the 3rd John's-Letter.

So, if you are looking for a verse written by John, you need to pay close attention as to whether it is in John's-Gospel or in one of John's-Letters.

In the Gospel of John, there is an exciting story about sheep and their shepherd.

You can read it in Chapter 10. By now you know how to find the Gospel of John. Then you flip through until you've found the large, bold 10. From this 10th chapter, please read verses 1 to 15.

Verily, verily, I say to you, He that enters not in by the door to the fold of the sheep, but mounts up elsewhere, he is a thief and a robber; but he that enters in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. To him the porter opens; and the sheep hear his voice; and he calls his own sheep by name, and leads them out. When he has put forth all his own, he goes before them, and the sheep follow him, because they know his voice. But they will not follow a stranger, but will flee from him, because they know not the voice of strangers. This allegory spoke Jesus to them, but they did not know what it was of which he spoke to them. Jesus therefore said again to them, Verily, verily, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All whoever came before me are thieves and robbers; but the sheep did not hear them. I am the door: if any one enter in by me, he will be saved, and will go in and will go out and will find pasture. The thief comes not but that he may steal, and kill, and destroy: I am come that they might have life, and might have it abundantly. I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep: but he who serves for wages, and who is not the shepherd, whose own the sheep are not, sees the wolf coming, and leaves the sheep and flees; and the wolf seizes them and scatters the sheep. Now he who serves for wages flees because he serves for wages, and is not himself concerned about the sheep. I am the good shepherd; and I know those that are mine, and am known of those that are mine, as the Father knows me and I know the Father; and I lay down my life for the sheep. (John 10:1-15)

Here, the Lord Jesus compares people to a flock of sheep that are in a sheepfold.

Who enters the fold through the door?

But he that enters in by the door is the shepherd of the sheep. (John 10:2)

Your response:

It is the   of the sheep.

The Lord Jesus says in verse 11: "I am the good shepherd".

Who tries to climb over the wall of the courtyard to get to the sheep?

Verily, verily, I say to you, He that enters not in by the door to the fold of the sheep, but mounts up elsewhere, he is a thief and a robber. (John 10:1)

Your response:

He who climbs over elsewhere is a   and a   .
