The Bible Course for Children

Eternally saved?

Can someone who has confessed their sins to God and believes in the Lord Jesus still go to hell?

In this course, we will discuss agriculture. We want to look at the practices of farmers who lived during the time of the Lord Jesus.

Today, farmers drive their large tractors over the fields when they sow grain. These machines did not exist back then. The farmer had to sow the grain by hand. He would tie a cloth around his waist, fill it with seeds, and then slowly walk over his field. He would repeatedly take a handful of seeds and throw them in a wide arc onto the land. This is how he distributed the seed. The seeds were then covered with a bit of soil using a tool.

The seeds that the farmer scattered fell in different places. Some seeds fell on the path at the edge of the field. Then birds came and ate them. Other seeds fell on rocky places in the field. The seeds sprouted, but before the plants grew big, the sun shone hot on the stones, causing the little plants to dry up.

Again, other grains fell into the thorn bushes. The small plants then received too little water and air and suffocated. No fruit ripened from all these seeds. Fortunately, many seeds also fell on good soil. They grew, became large, and produced much fruit.

That is what the Lord Jesus also told His listeners. Read it yourself in Matthew 13, 1-23.

Afterwards, He explained to them what we can learn from this: The seed is the Word of God, the Bible: Just as the farmer spreads the seed, the gospel, the good news of God, is preached today. Many people listen to these words. You are one of them too.

However, not everyone does the same with the Word of God that he hears:

  • One hears the Word of God, but in the next moment evil thoughts come to him and he forgets what he has heard. It is like the seed that falls on the path and is eaten by birds.
  • Another hears God's Word, rejoices in it and finds it beautiful. A little later, he is mocked or persecuted because of it. This bothers him so much that he no longer wants to believe in the Word of God. It is like the seed that falls on the stones. The plant withers when the sun comes up.
  • Yet another hears the Word of God, but then thinks about his difficulties, for example in school, or how he can make as much money as possible. In the process, he forgets what he has heard. It is like the seed that falls among the thorns and is choked by them.
  • A fourth one hears the word and believes in it. He obeys God and does what He says. The first three have not done this.

Let's be honest: which of the four people do you resemble?

Your response:

We should therefore not only read the Bible because it is interesting, but so that we may learn what God wants from us. If we obey Him, we are like that fourth man where the Word fell on good ground.

I have written to you in the previous lessons,

  • that you must confess your sins before God and
  • must believe that the Lord Jesus bore the penalty for your sins on the cross.

Only this way can you be saved. Have you already done that?

If you have done it, God has forgiven you all your sins and you are saved forever. God is so just that He will never punish you again for sins that He has once forgiven you for.

God compares this to Him sinking all the sins He forgives into the depths of the sea. The Prophet Micah says:

He will yet again have compassion on us, he will tread under foot our iniquities: and you will cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. (Micah 7:19)

Do you know how deep the oceans are in some places? Not just a few meters, like the lakes in our area, but several kilometers deep. The Pacific Ocean is in places more than 10 kilometers deep! If our sins are lying down there, no one can bring them out again.

You can then be absolutely sure that you are not lost, but that you will be with the Lord Jesus for all eternity.

Thank the Lord Jesus every day now for personally dying for you to set you free and make you happy!
