The Bible Course for Children

Noah and the Great Flood

1

Do you know the story of Noah?

You can read it in Genesis 6:8 to chapter 9:19.

At the start of this story are two particularly important verses:

And the LORD saw that the wickedness of Man was great on the earth, and every imagination of the thoughts of his heart only evil continually. (Genesis 6:5)

You can find the second verse in the sorting task.

Your response:

  • Noah was a righteous man,
  • Noah walked with God.
  • This is the story of Noah:
  • perfect among
  • his contemporaries;

These two verses show a great contrast. People are referred to as evil, but it is said of a man that he walked with God. This means that Noah asked for God's will in order not to sin.

What then happened is denied by many people, sadly also by many teachers in school. But the Bible tells it this way and we know that God's Word never lies.

God said to Noah:

"People are so wicked that I want to kill them all. Only you and your family are to survive. I will make such a heavy rain fall on the earth that even the highest mountains will become flooded. Then all people and animals will have to drown. To ensure that nothing happens to you, you should build an ark (which is a large ship). When it's ready, I will send you many animals, always a male and a female. Go with your family and the animals into the ark, so that you may be saved from the great flood."

Do you think Noah believed what God said?

Yes, Noah knew that God always tells the truth and immediately started building the ark with his three sons.

2

What were the names of these sons? (Chapter 6, verse 10)

Your response:

While Noah was building the ship in the middle of the dry land, people must have surely asked him why he was doing that. Then Noah preached to them and said that God would soon destroy all the wicked people with a flood. Did they believe Noah? Did they regret their sins and turn to God?

No, they did not heed Noah's warnings and continued to live as before.

Then came the day when Noah and his family went into the ship. The animals also came, as God had instructed. Then God Himself closed the door of the ark. Now it became exciting for everyone who was watching Noah. Was it true that the great flood was starting, or was Noah a liar who had been telling them fairy tales all along?

People must have been terrified when it suddenly began to rain. And, oh no, it did not stop for forty days and forty nights! The flood kept rising, until cities and villages disappeared under the water, then hills, small mountains, and finally even the highest mountains on earth.
