Joseph in Egypt

Genesis 39

Have you continued reading the story of Joseph? The 24th lesson ended with Joseph being sold by his brothers as a slave to Egypt.

In Genesis 39, the story continues.

When Joseph arrives in Egypt, he is purchased by a high official of Pharaoh (as the kings in ancient Egypt were called). This man is named Potiphar and is the head of the king's security police. In his house, Joseph must now work as a slave. Soon Potiphar takes notice: he has many slaves, but this new one, Joseph, does his work particularly thoroughly and well.

Potiphar is very pleased with this. Therefore, he appoints Joseph to be the overseer of all other slaves. This was a good decision, because ever since Joseph started overseeing everything, things have been running much better than before.

1

Why? This is at the end of verse 5:

Your response:

"The LORD blessed the Egyptian’s house for   sake; and the   was on all that he had in the house and in the field."

2

Oops, verse 6 got mixed up. Can you help?

Your response:

  • with anything under his care,
  • And he entrusted everything,
  • which he ate.
  • handsome in form
  • and handsome in appearance.
  • into the hands of Joseph
  • except for the bread,
  • And Joseph was
  • and did not concern himself
  • that he had,

Joseph had heard at home with his parents that there is a God in heaven, he knows God. Joseph knows that God can also help him, the young slave, and surely prayed about it. Did the LORD now hear Joseph's request and let him return to his father? No, he had to stay in Egypt, but the LORD helped him with his work and gave his blessing to it.

That's how it is sometimes with us today. We ask God for something, but He does not answer us. "Why not?" we often ask ourselves then. God wants something different in these cases than we do. Later in Joseph's life, we will see why he was not allowed to go home.

God makes no mistakes!

We must always firmly engrave this in our minds, even if He does not fulfill a request for us.
