John was a disciple and apostle of the Lord Jesus. He wrote five books of the New Testament:
Today we want to get to know something from two of these books.
In his gospel, John never names himself. When he speaks of himself, he always says: "The disciple whom Jesus loved". He knew very well that the Lord Jesus loved him.
Do you also know that the Lord loves you?
Please now read John's Gospel 3:1 to 21.
It tells the story of a respected man who comes to the Lord Jesus. He had surely heard a lot about Him and now wants to speak with Him. But he is afraid becasue perhaps someone might be watching him and will mock him afterward. That's why Nicodemus simply goes to the Lord at night. He thinks: "In the darkness, surely no one can see me".
When he arrived at the Lord, he addresses Him politely:
He came to him by night, and said to him, Rabbi, we know that you are come a teacher from God, for none can do these signs that you do unless God be with him. (John 3:2)
Then the Lord replies to him: (John 3:3)
Your response:
"Born again" - what does that mean?
Nicodemus asks the Lord Jesus about it: "How can a man be born when he is old?" But the Lord isn't talking about someone being reborn from their mother. He is speaking of an internal rebirth.
The interior of a person, his evil thoughts, his godless wishes, his bad goals, all this must become different. And this doesn't happen through a slow improvement, through effort, good works, or something like that. God gives to a person who believes in the Lord Jesus a whole new internal life, a completely new world of thought that pleases God. This is the new birth. The Lord Jesus explains to Nicodemus that it is a prerequisite to enter Heaven.
Have you already experienced this new birth?
Then, the Lord Jesus tells Nicodemus the important verse that you already know from Lesson 1:
For God so loved the world, that he gave his only-begotten Son, that whoever believes on him may not perish, but have life eternal. (John 3:16)
