Basic Bible Course on the Epistle to the Romans

Suffering - Even as a Child of God?

The children of God are so richly blessed on one hand: those who are in Christ Jesus will not be judged (verse 1) and the Holy Spirit Himself dwells in us and testifies to us that we are children and heirs of God (verses 16-17).

On the other hand, many Christians suffer and struggle with many problems. But this is not a contradiction.

Please now read Romans 8, verses 18-39.

1

Find out the three key messages of verse 18.

Your response:

How does the Apostle describe the difficulties that many Christians endure?
What does he compare these sufferings to?
Which of these two things weighs more heavily?
He compares them to the coming glory that will be revealed to us.
He says that the sufferings are not worthy to be compared to the coming glory.
He refers to them as the sufferings of this present time.
2

One day, the children of God will be in glory (this is what is meant by the "revelation of the sons of God" in verse 19). The whole creation is waiting for this and "groans", as described in verse 22.

Why?

“For the creature has been made subject to vanity, not of its will, but by reason of him who has subjected the same, in hope” (Romans 8:20).

“That the creature itself also will be set free from the bondage of corruption into the liberty of the glory of the children of God” (Romans 8:21).

“For we know that the whole creation groans together and travails in pain together until now” (Romans 8:22).

Your response:

The creation has been made subject to   (verse 20), not willingly, and groans, and travails in pain together until now. (verse 22)
It will be   from the   of corruption (verse 21).

Bible verses in brackets refer to Romans 8:20-22.

3

Name some of the consequences that affect all people because sin has entered the world and why the entire creation is subjected to "bondage" (or servitude).

Your response:

4

One might answer: If the children of God are already saved now, why then do they still have to wait until their bodies are also freed from pain and suffering?

Your response:

Now, verse 24 tells us that   is an important aspect of our salvation. Therefore, we still have to be patient, or expect in   (verse 25) and do not yet see the entire result of our salvation.
