The Acts of the Apostles - Part 3

Acts Chapter 16

The starting point of the Apostle Paul's missionary journeys was always Antioch in Syria. With his second missionary journey, Paul had two goals.

  1. First of all, he was eager to know how the believers in the places he visited during his first journey were doing. This shows the care he, as a good shepherd, had for the sheep.
  2. Next, he desired to introduce the Gospel to even more people and visit new areas.

First, read chapter 16 and then answer the questions.

Besides Silas, from Derbe and Lystra, Paul also wanted to take Timothy on his missionary journey.

Who was this Timothy?

Your response:

Both his mother and grandmother had sincere faith, they were believers.
As a child, he came to know the holy Scriptures (of the Old Testament).
We read about his age being young, certainly significantly younger than Paul.
He likely came to faith in the Lord Jesus through Paul's preaching, as he refers to him as his "beloved child".
He had a good reputation among the brothers in Lystra and Iconium.

Timothy had a Jewish mother, but a Greek father and maybe that's why he was not circumcised.

Your response:

What did Paul do then? He   him.

Why? Because of the   , in order to remove any hostile pretext from them against Timothy.

That's strange, don't you think?

But consider this: When it comes to the question of salvation, Paul does not waver even a millimeter and insists that one is saved by faith alone, that is, without circumcision and without observing the law.

However, when it comes to winning souls for the Lord, then Paul wants to go to the extreme: He meets the Jews as much as possible and therefore circumcises Timothy.

What does Paul write in this context in 1 Corinthians 9:20 (first part of the verse)?

Your response:

  • to the Jews
  • that I might gain the Jews.
  • became
  • as a Jew,
  • in order
  • And I

In verses 6 to 10, we see how Paul and his co-workers allow themselves to be guided by the Lord when it comes to the question of where they must go to preach the Gospel.

The Lord gives His servants clear instructions for this:

Your response:

What were they first hindered by the Holy Spirit?
Then they wanted to go to Bithynia. What happens now?
How does the LORD finally tell them where they should go?
The Spirit of Jesus did not allow them.
Speaking the word of God in Asia.
Paul had a vision in the night. A Macedonian man said: "Pass over into Macedonia and help us!"
