Evil, dead and good works

After two lessons about witnessing, we will now turn to works. These two topics belong together.

The idea of witnessing is primarily about what we tell others about God and the Lord Jesus.

The subject of works is mostly about what we do. Both are necessary. Action and word go hand in hand.

The Bible distinguishes three kinds of works:

  • evil works,
  • dead works, and
  • good works.

Of course, we would primarily like to engage with good works. However, we will start this lesson by first addressing evil and dead works.

Evil works are all the bad things one does. What does the Bible say about this? Can you match each question to the correct answer?

God records the sins of all people. And at some point, all people who have not accepted the Lord Jesus as their Savior in their lives will stand before the great white throne. Then they will be condemned by the Lord Jesus.

What happens at the great white throne can be read in Revelation 20:11-15.

And I saw the dead, great and small, standing before the throne, and books were opened; and another book was opened, which is that of life.

The great white throne with the Lord Jesus as judge could make us afraid. For He knows everything about us. But fortunately, this judge is still the Savior today! If we listen to Him and believe in Him and God who sent Him, then we will not be condemned. For what is written in John 5:24?

After evil works, we come to dead works. This is a term used in Hebrews 9:14.

What does it mean? Dead works are not evil works. They are works that one does to get something from God. One wants to earn something with it.

An example of this is shown in Luke 18:18-23.
