Basic Bible Course 3

Justified

A man is accused of theft. He goes to court, but it is proven that he is innocent. The judge acquits the man. He is declared innocent or "justified".

If it could have been proven that this man committed the theft, then the judge would have had to declare him guilty and condemn him. A just judge cannot acquit a guilty person.

We are also guilty before God. However, God can do what no earthly judge can do. God can acquit guilty people or "justify" them.

How God can do this without compromising His righteousness, we will see in this lesson.

1

What does God say in the Bible about the natural man?

Your response:

In Romans 3:10 it is written: "There is   a righteous man, not even   ."

2

The previous quote in the Epistle to the Romans is from the Psalms in the Old Testament, where you can also find further and similar statements.

Your response:

Psalm 14:1
Psalm 53:3
Psalm 143:2
Ecclesiastes 7:20
Every one is gone back, they are together become corrupt: there is none that does good, not even one.
They have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good.
And enter not into judgment with your servant; for in your sight no man living will be justified.
For there is not a righteous man upon earth, that does good and sins not.
3

Therefore, every person is unjust in God's eyes and guilty. What is said about the guilty in Exodus 34:7?

Your response:

  • and abundant in goodness and truth, keeping mercy unto thousands,
  • clearing the guilty.
  • forgiving iniquity, transgression and sin – but by no means
  • And the LORD passed by before his face and proclaimed:
  • The LORD, God, merciful and gracious, slow to anger
4

How can God still declare sinners as "righteous", in other words: declare "guilty ones as innocent"?

Your response:

This is only possible because He declared an innocent one guilty in our place and punished Him:
"But he was wounded for   transgressions,   was bruised for our iniquities; the   of our peace was upon   , and with his stripes we are   ." (Isaiah 53:5)
